About
School of Martial Arts West LA offers classes in martial arts, self defense, Kung Fu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, T’ai Chi, Tai Chi, meditation, and yoga. The program includes both traditional martial arts and training in self defense on the ground. Classes are described as real martial arts, moving meditation, an incredible workout, and focused on spiritual health.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options Monday–Saturday during daytime and evening hours
Sifu Ryan Scott leads instruction and has practiced martial arts since age 8 in dojos across the United States, China, and Japan. He has extensive experience working with high-ranking martial artists in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Tai Chi, Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, and Yuchia Kung Fu, and he often incorporates Brazilian Jiu Jitsu principles and techniques into his adult martial arts classes. Ancient Chinese martial arts are his primary teaching philosophy, and students learn Kung Fu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, T’ai Chi, and meditation while deepening their mindfulness practice and becoming the best version of themselves. Sifu Scott is the third student to reach the rank of black under Sifu Robert Brown, a martial arts master with 40 years of experience, black belts in four different martial arts styles, and thousands of students taught. He has completed a pilgrimage to China to visit the Shaolin monks, briefly studied Aikido at the Hombu Dojo in Japan, and is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt awarded by Roger Machado, a coral belt and one of the highest-ranking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners in the world, under whom he still trains.
The leadership team includes Sifu Ryan Scott, Sifu Robert Brown, and Roger Machado. The program notes that the first class is free, emphasizes kids and respect, and describes training partners as partners not opponents. School of Martial Arts West LA also highlights community involvement under the theme “School of Martial Arts Giving Back.”
