About

The UCLA Musical Theater Laboratory Intensive is a three-week conservatory-style program where high school musical theater students sing, dance, act, rehearse, and take daily classes in acting, dancing, and singing. Students also participate in weekend guest workshops and present a final performance that is open to invited guests. Admission is by digital audition and instructor consent, and students receive a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the program; the program does not carry college credit.

The program is for high school musical theater students in grades 9 through 12 who seek the discipline and training required for participation in a university musical theater program or a career in the performing arts. Applications are reviewed and admission is granted on a rolling basis starting December 1, with an application deadline of May 1, 2026, and an enrollment deadline of June 6, 2026. A maximum of one excused program absence is permitted, and financial aid is not available for the Theater Laboratory Intensives. On-campus housing for students 14–16 years old is available for 2026.

The application requires a personal statement, a video audition of a song, monologue, and dance, and a resume. For the singing audition, applicants must sing a selection of 32 bars from the standard musical theater repertory with accompaniment and then demonstrate vocal range by singing along with MTSI recorded vocal scales, using “eeee, eeee, eeee, eeee, ahhh, ahhh, ahhh, ahhh” for scales going up and “yah, yah, yah, yah, yah” for scales going down, stopping when out of range and using chest/mix voice then head voice. Audition videos for the slate, monologue, dance combination, song, and scales must be uploaded separately, with the monologue and song recorded in one take against a blank wall or door, framed in a three-quarter shot, using a stationary device and a good sounding speaker so both voice and accompaniment can be heard; applicants are instructed not to do a scene with someone reading lines off-camera and not to send prior performances, but to record a new video. For the dance audition, applicants are instructed to film in a well-lit, spacious area where the whole body can be seen, with ample room to move freely, and to wear tight fitting clothing so the body can clearly be seen.

International students must obtain a minimum TOEFL score of 100 with sub-scores above 24, or an IELTS score of 7.5 or above. Students are directed to explore the American Theater Wing and the Andrew Lloyd Weber Training Scholarship.
