About

Gan Malibu Preschool includes activities such as mitzvoth (good deeds), middot (acts of kindness), long-term projects, music, art, and nature. Children spend time playing on a patio, doing art projects, picking herbs from the garden to use on pizza they bake, and, as described in a parent testimonial, may go to Underwood Farm to pick vegetables.

• Ages: 0–5 years old

Gan Malibu Preschool was established in 1999. The program is described as a Community Infant Center & Preschool and is influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach, with learning that is both teacher-led and self-directed, following the child’s interests. Nature affects every part of the curriculum, and children may see deer on the mountain, dolphins in the ocean, and various birds and butterflies as part of their experience. As a Jewish educational center, the school intertwines the moral values of Judaism throughout all disciplines, and Jewish values drive the school culture, community environment, and curriculum. The mission statement explains that the school focuses on nurturing skills, emotional growth, character, and spiritual development through play, experience, creating, social collaboration, and exploration, and on fostering children’s natural curiosity to inspire learning.

The leadership team includes Director Sarah Cunin, and parents refer to “Sarah” and “Sara” in their testimonials. Gan Malibu Preschool has a nondiscriminatory policy welcoming children from all types of families and is described in a testimonial as embracing kids from every religion and culture. The school functions as a community within the preschool and with its families, and a parent describes the work Gan is doing to support family and the entire community as profound. Gan Malibu Preschool is a three-time Malibu Choice Awards winner (2017, 2018, 2019).

Parent testimonials describe the preschool as “hands down the best preschool in Malibu,” praise the teachers as “exceptionally creative and cutting-edge in their professional skills,” and note that children receive updates with pictures about what they are doing. One parent shares that their daughter learned about different cultures, did “amazing art projects,” and went to Underwood Farm to pick vegetables. Another parent thanks Gan for support through the first two years of parenting and expresses “utmost respect and highest recommendation,” and another notes that their children were “deeply cared about” and “academically above the bar when they entered kindergarten,” and thanks “Sara” for the experience.
