CodeAdvantage offers in-person after school classes and online coding classes with live instructors, along with summer camps, private online classes, small group classes, a “My Friends Online” option, and private tutoring sessions. The program uses a custom, project-based curriculum with 45+ classes, badges and certificates, and differentiated learning, and provides a turnkey approach to 20+ coding and robotics classes for schools. The after-school computer programming courses are described as award-winning and have been featured many times in the media, and the program self-describes as the fastest growing STEM program in the US with a retention rate of close to 100%. Classes use an industry-best 7:1 student-to-teacher ratio, and instructor training includes a focus on classroom management.
Instructors are selected from US universities and colleges with tech backgrounds and prior work experience with kids, and are described by the program as “Rockstar Coding instructors” with strong technical backgrounds. The leadership team includes co-founders Charu Chaturvedi and Paul May, and Educational Director Erica Chodkowski. Erica Chodkowski has a dual master’s degree in Elementary and Special Education; Charu Chaturvedi has a BS in chemical engineering, an MBA from Columbia University, and holds two patents; and Paul May has an MBA from Columbia University.
CodeAdvantage states that it does not just teach coding and robotics, but creates learning environments for kids to develop logical thinking, creative exploration, and critical reasoning skills while having fun. The program partners with schools including Kew-Forest School in Forest Hills (Queens), Ethical Culture in New York City, and Lycee Francais in New York City.
Parent, student, and school testimonials describe experiences with specific classes and partnerships. A 7th grader from Illinois says, “I LOVE - Roblox Code - it's so cool to play with something I created! I am also learning about variables and imports - a whole language my parents don't understand!!” A 9-year-old from New Jersey says, “Scratch was a fun class because I like playing video games and now. I can create my own! It is like a dream come true!” A parent from California reports that his 13-year-old son “LOVED his Python class” and was “always excited to share what he created in class.” Kew-Forest School in Queens states that CodeAdvantage “make the complicated world of coding fun and interactive” and that children “self-discover certain key concepts like cause and effect in a natural and engaging environment.” Ethical Culture in New York City notes that “students come first,” that instructors have teaching experience and backgrounds and follow a “rigorous curriculum that is clear, organized, and with a goal in mind,” and that students are “engaged, excited, and most of all happy.” Lycee Francais in New York City reports that CodeAdvantage has helped develop technology classes at the school, “provide innovative learning opportunities for children, recruit good teachers and always listen to our needs.”
