About

TinkerTech offers coding, robotics, and maker programs where students take on fun maker activities, coding challenges, and hands-on design and engineering challenges. Participants work on projects like building with electric circuits, wiring and programming robots (including LEGO bots and micro:bit), and making simple machines. Students also create animated worlds, clicker games, and platformers using Scratch, and some classes delve into machine learning AI.

• Ages: 6–13 years old

TinkerTech’s mission is to teach students the skills they need to create their own projects, from building an electric circuit to wiring a robot, using hands-on programming skills to build and progress their technology capabilities. Expert instructors introduce activities that use a mix of simple maker materials such as card, copper tape, LEDs, and the latest educational technology tools, supported by specially curated kits for robotics. All classes use a curriculum created by a team of maker educators, and instructors guide students as they explore open-ended projects and challenges and are encouraged to have ownership of their ideas and make projects that are meaningful to them and their communities.

Programs are guided by experienced computer science instructors who are described as passionate about STEM and education, and the team works as helping guides while students perform STEM activities. TinkerTech also offers professional development and training for educators who want to incorporate more STEM into their own programs and classrooms. The two Ts in the TinkerTech logo stand for Tinker and Tech, and the big and small gears symbolize partnerships between teacher and student, TinkerTech families, and the enrichment programs they partner with.

TinkerTech partners with recreation departments and schools to deliver coding, robotics, and maker programs for elementary and middle school students, and can put together a custom program for schools or organizations using its tried and tested curriculum of activities. One parent reports that TinkerTech is their son’s favorite part of the week and that he enjoys the chance to make things with his hands. A student shares that TinkerTech is their favorite class because they can make what they want, including electric vehicles and launchers, and that they wish the class were longer. A program coordinator notes that the variety of materials, from cardboard and laser-cut wood to copper tape and batteries, encourages children to experiment, design, assemble, and take home projects they are proud of.
