Bojuka Ryu has been a place to discover the martial arts for children and adults on the Monterey Peninsula for over 55 years, with its Golden Anniversary marked from 1970–2020. It began with a vision in 1970, and the headquarters for Bojuka Ryu was built in 2001 by organizing students as a student built dojo. For health reasons, founder Shihan Eddie G. Stewart ceased instructing in 2002 and passed away on March 7, 2014.

The leadership team includes Shihan Eddie G. Stewart as the founder of Bojuka Ryu, and Sensei Eddie Nakao and Sensei Janine as head instructors. Sensei Eddie Nakao holds a 7th degree Blackbelt in Bojuka Ryu, a 4th degree Blackbelt in Judo through the United States Judo Federation, and is a certified International Coach through U.S.A. Judo, the national governing body of Judo for the United States. He has been training, competing, instructing, and studying the martial arts for over 50 years. Sensei Janine is retired from the U.S. National team, holds a 5th Degree Blackbelt in Bojuka Ryu and a 3rd degree blackbelt in Judo, is a 4-time Senior National Champion, a 3-time World Team member, a Pan American Games Silver Medalist, and has won multiple World Cup medals.

The program’s mission statement explains that through its art it strives to enrich each student’s life regardless of age and works to instill an environment of self-discipline, respect, honor, patience, and giving back to the community. It states that whether a student’s interests lie in self-protection, physical fitness, competition, or self-improvement, there is a path of instruction available. Bojuka Ryu teaches practical applications for real life situations and is able to modify techniques to fit into the competition arena and adhere to specified rules, with conditioning and the importance of mental fitness identified as major focuses in training. The program offers both the martial art and the Olympic sport of Judo, and its competition team participates in regional, national, and international Judo events.

Community involvement includes the Throw-A-Thon Community Fundraiser, which delivered twenty baskets full of essential items, toys, games, non-perishables, and treats to the Monterey County DSS for twenty families in need. All proceeds from a tournament go to the Bojuka program.
