About
Bojuka Ryu Martial Arts & Judo Programs offers Bojuka classes, Judo classes, fitness classes, private classes, martial arts summer day camps, and Beginning/Novice Judo classes for kids. Students can learn and train in the martial art and Olympic sport of Judo, with Beginning/Novice Judo classes available for kids 6 years and up. The program teaches practical applications for real life situations and can modify techniques to fit into the competition arena and adhere to specified rules, with conditioning and mental fitness as major focuses in training.

Bojuka Ryu has been a place to discover the martial arts for children and adults on the Monterey Peninsula for over 55 years, beginning in 1970. Bojuka Ryu was founded by Shihan Eddie G. Stewart, who designed the art based on his experience in Boxing, Japanese JuJitsu, Judo, and Karate (Japanese and Korean styles), and during his military career he served as a hand-to-hand combat instructor. The headquarters and dojo were organized and built by students in 2001, and Bojuka Ryu’s headquarters and dojo are located on the Monterey Peninsula in Marina, CA. For health reasons, Shihan Eddie G. Stewart ceased instructing in 2002 and passed away on March 7, 2014.
The leadership team includes founder Shihan Eddie G. Stewart, Head Instructor Sensei Eddie Nakao, Head Instructor Sensei Janine, and Botan Joshi, who heads Women’s Judo programs and works with competition teams. Sensei Eddie Nakao studied directly under Shihan Stewart, with whom he earned his 7th degree Blackbelt in Bojuka Ryu, holds a 4th degree Blackbelt in Judo through the United States Judo Federation, is a certified International Coach through U.S.A. Judo, and has been training, competing, instructing, and studying the martial arts for over 50 years. Botan Joshi is retired from the U.S. National team, is a 4-time Senior National Champion, a 3-time World Team member, a Pan American Games Silver Medalist, has won multiple World Cup medals, and holds a 5th Degree Blackbelt in Bojuka Ryu and a 3rd degree blackbelt in Judo.
Through its art, the program states that it strives to enrich each student’s life regardless of age and works to instill an environment of self-discipline, respect, honor, patience, and giving back to the community. As part of its community involvement, the program delivered twenty baskets full of essential items, toys, games, non-perishables, and treats to the Monterey County DSS for twenty families in need at Christmas as part of a Throw-A-Thon fundraiser, and all proceeds from a tournament go to the Bojuka organization.
