Cal State Monterey Bay was established in 1994 and is a comprehensive university that is active and open year-round. Its campus is built on the site of a former military fort and straddles the cities of Seaside and Marina. The university states that it prepares students to contribute responsibly to the local and global community through a transformative education in an inclusive environment and is fully accredited and dedicated to continuous improvement. Cal State Monterey Bay is described as a top performer for social mobility.

Several specific summer offerings are highlighted. Upward Bound provides fundamental support and motivation to participants in their preparation for college entrance and serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. EOP Summer Bridge is a transition program for invited EOP first-time freshmen and focuses on helping students acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to build a bridge from high school to a successful college experience. Otter Athletics offers a wide variety of sports camps to all ages and skill levels, and Otter Sports Camps focus on improving athletic skills, developing friendships, and learning lessons in leadership, teamwork, and responsibility.

Camp SEA Lab fosters lifelong excitement, scientific understanding, and stewardship of coasts and the ocean, and provides marine oriented programs that promote Science, Education and Adventure for youth, families, and teachers. The American Language and Culture Program (ALCP) provides an opportunity to learn and enhance English from knowledgeable, friendly ESL experts and is for students who wish to improve their English skills for professional development or academic preparation. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) offers many summer programs and events, including the Transfer Student Summer Research Program, workshops, and events.

The surrounding natural environment is closely tied to several programs. The nearby Salinas Valley is known as the “Salad Bowl of the Nation” and is described as a living lab for agriculture students. Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary features an underwater canyon twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and is home to 180 species of seabirds and shorebirds, 36 species of marine mammals, and 525 species of fish. Fort Ord National Monument encompasses 86 miles of trails.

The university notes community involvement through activities such as joining the city of Seaside in honoring Martin Luther King Jr., with CSUMB community members working behind the scenes on the MLK Day march and program in Seaside. One student, Jordan Janusz ’24, a Kinesiology major, states that at Monterey Bay they feel seen and acknowledged, have a relationship with every professor, and feel that professors want to see them do well, which they say makes it easier to learn. Another student, Annie Hansen ’25, a Marine Science major and Goldwater Scholar, says that being close to the ocean and learning about it in classes, then going to the beach to see it in person, has been a very cool experience, and that diving has given a much better idea of how ecosystems interact.
