Oak Heart Forest Program
Alhambra Creek Staging Area, Briones Regional Park and Kennedy Grove Regional Park, Martinez, CA
About
Oak Heart Forest Program includes time for children to explore trails, build forts, climb trees, and engage in extended periods of free play. The program also offers creating potions, using natural dyes and pigments, wet felting, painting, sewing, and making plant-based medicine such as elderberry syrup and hand salve. Children take part in collaborative games, seasonal nature-based art and crafts, singing songs, storytelling, puppet plays, and yoga.
• Ages: 2–8 years old
• Schedule: 8-week sessions, generally 9am–1pm, plus a Parent/Child Class on Mondays from 9–11am
Oak Heart Forest Program describes itself as a high-quality mixed-aged outdoor program with a nurturing Nature-based curriculum that focuses on developing children’s head, heart, and hands. The program serves children ages 3–6 years and also offers a Parent/Child Class for caregivers, parents, and their children ages 2–8 years. Children learn to identify local flora and fauna, recognize plants that can heal or harm, track and observe animals, and observe daily changes in the land, often using wild harvested materials in their play and work. Seasonal herbal teas are included each season or session, and the program notes that it offers small classes and a low child-to-teacher ratio. Summer Camp 2026 is open for enrollment. The playgroup component has helped families connect to the community in a special way.
Parents describe Oak Heart Forest Program as a forest school, a nature camp, a playgroup program, and a forest school drop-off program. In their testimonials, parents Lindsay, Kim, Sarah (with E and C), Jessica, Kathryn, Cas, and Veronica share that their children have attended offerings such as forest school, summer camp, playgroup, and a drop-off program from about age 2 through elementary school. Several parents state that they and their children “love Oak Heart” or “love the playgroup program,” and they refer to the program as a meaningful part of their family’s experience.
