About

Ravenswood Classroom Partners Tutoring Programs offers literacy tutoring, math tutoring, and middle school tutoring. Students work on letters, sounds, and high frequency words, practice decoding more complex text, and receive individualized math tutoring using math curriculum provided by the classroom teacher.

• Ages: 4–13 years old

The program provides volunteer tutoring and mentoring to Ravenswood students and focuses on academic growth and social and emotional well-being. Tutors work with students from Transitional Kindergarten through 6th grade on literacy, math, and social-emotional skills, and a comprehensive tutoring and mentoring program specifically for middle school students is planned to start in fall 2025. The literacy tutoring uses a high-dosage approach and the same structured, phonics-based program that teachers use, with a modified approach in Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten. The math program is adapted for both the youngest learners and older elementary students, and individualized math tutoring is based on the classroom teacher’s curriculum.

Over 140 Ravenswood Classroom Partners volunteers work with teachers in the Ravenswood City School District, serving communities in East Palo Alto and eastern Menlo Park, and the organization aligns with district priorities, programs, and curriculum. Volunteers return to the same classroom week after week to build trust and lasting relationships, and no prior tutoring is required for volunteers because training and ongoing support are provided. The organization supports students facing challenges including economic disadvantage, English language learning, reading below grade level, below grade level in math, and homelessness or housing insecurity. Ravenswood Classroom Partners emphasizes educational equity, whole child support, working in partnership, meeting students’ unique needs, and building a volunteer community.

The mission of Ravenswood Classroom Partners is: “Inspired by the belief that every child deserves an equal opportunity to learn, our mission is to provide volunteer tutoring and mentoring to Ravenswood students.” The leadership team includes Program Director Susan MacLeod and Assistant Director of Teaching & Learning Karen Schreiner. A district leader described Ravenswood Classroom Partners volunteers and leaders as supportive, responsive, communicative, collaborative, and impactful on student learning while implementing a new structured literacy curriculum, and reported seeing improved outcomes on student learning after a few months. A 3rd grade teacher stated that Ravenswood Classroom Partners volunteers really care for the kids and want to make an impact in the students’ lives, and a 2nd grade teacher stated that volunteers do a great job of creating relationships with students, which is reflected in students’ academic and social success.
