Mei Jia Chinese Learning Center is a multi-faceted Mandarin language and Chinese cultural learning center. It offers a morning program for preschoolers, an after-school program for elementary students, a summer camp, and a weekend program for students at different ages and levels. Play-based preschool Mandarin classes are for children ages 2.5–5, and no previous Mandarin knowledge is required or expected for the preschool class. In-person weekend Mandarin programs are available for students from 5–18 years of age as well as adults, with three different level classes (Beginner to Advanced Level). Classes in the Chinese classroom are taught entirely in Mandarin, with a low teacher-to-student ratio, and students are grouped into beginning, intermediate, and advanced level classes according to grade and language proficiency. The curriculum uses a topic-based approach that combines individual and group projects, and there are group online language classes with set weekday and weekend schedules, as well as private and semi-private online Mandarin classes that are customizable and flexible.
The summer camp is divided into five two-week sessions, each described as a new adventure, and offers skill levels of Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced for campers entering kindergarten through 6th grade. Summer camp registration is first come, first served, there is no camp on holidays, and there is an additional charge for field trips. The summer camp refund policy offers decreasing refunds as dates approach, with no refunds after May 1, and the online registration form may still allow registration when a session is full, in which case the child is placed on a waiting list. For summer camp, campers should bring their own healthy lunch and snacks.
Mill Valley Saturday Mandarin Class registration is first come, first serve, and the Mill Valley class will be cancelled if there are fewer than six sign-ups. For the Mill Valley Saturday Mandarin Class, all fees including registration, books and materials, and the first month tuition deposit must be submitted at enrollment to reserve a spot, and the registration form and a check payable to MJCLC must be submitted to secure the child’s spot.
Many students from Mei Jia Chinese Learning Center have passed AP Chinese classes and continued Mandarin studies through college courses. Other students have won awards in Chinese calligraphy and poetry contests, including the Chinese Bridge Cup Recital and Calligraphy Contests and CLTAC (Chinese Language Teachers Association of California).
