About
Marin GreenPlay Camp offers science-based, place-based experiences in nature that include developmentally appropriate play, extreme sports, restorative stewardship, and other hands-on outdoor activities. Campers take part in native plant restoration projects, beach clean ups, citizen science, service projects, and at least one restoration session as part of the program.
• Ages: 5–16 years old
For the last 17 years, MGP Camp Director Julie, in collaboration with dozens of skilled nature guides and thousands of children, founded and continues to lead Marin GreenPlay Camp, which has been making nature fun for over 15 years. Marin GreenPlay Camp was created to ensure that all Marin children have the chance to grow up with a keen sense of the place where they live, focused on the lands and waters of Marin County. Marin GreenPlay Camp Guides are locals and have college degrees or equivalent life experiences, and they are paid among the highest wages in the day camp sector.
The camp describes itself as Marin County's favorite Earth-friendly summer camp and uses place and relationship-based education, with experiential learning that allows children to learn by doing. The program works with government, non-profit, and private land stewards on service projects so that participants engage in native plant restoration projects, beach clean ups, citizen science, and other volunteer activities. The camp director is a University of California-certified naturalist and an Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education-certified environmental educator, is a graduate of the Environmental Forum of Marin, and holds a BA from Barnard College, a graduate degree from the University of Miami, certificates in natural history and environmental science from the College of Marin, and a certificate in sustainability from Dominican University.
She has given back to the community by serving on several boards and participating in countless restoration projects and other environmental initiatives, including the recent reconstruction of the state-of-the-art College of Marin Bolinas Marine Lab. Camp guides describe the atmosphere at Marin GreenPlay Camp as joyful, curious, and playful, and note that Julie is an amazing, attentive, supportive, and communicative leader who keeps things well organized while allowing flexibility to follow campers’ interests. Testimonials from guides between 2020 and 2025 describe that they enjoy working with knowledgeable guides, exploring outdoors every day, sharing the “magic” of local areas with campers, and being part of a very inclusive camp with a goal of zero judgment where everyone is playing and exploring nature together.
