ICEC has been a trusted name in after-school education for over a decade, with Principal Cathy Xue leading the program. The abacus instructor is described as extremely knowledgeable and skilled at teaching abacus. ICEC’s mission states that it aims to help students excel in their academic studies, build a safe, cheerful, and nurturing environment for academic and social development, and instill lifelong learning skills and creativity, using California School Standards as its teaching guideline and constructive expectations for all children. The mission also states that the program values academic performance to maximize family time at home and integrates its core values into enthusiasm, responsibility, and etiquette teachings.
The program features immersive Chinese language courses, a Singaporean math and science curriculum, a low teacher-student ratio of 1:10, and small class sizes. Extra enrichment activities include abacus, drawing, dance, music classes, various sports training, and a computer coding class. ICEC also offers weekend adult Mandarin classes and culture exchange programs between China and the US. All programs are described as integrated with the latest educational technologies, and all teachers are described as trained to use high-tech tools to teach and design learning activities. Teachers at ICEC will walk children to classes at neighboring schools in the same building.
Parent testimonials describe ICEC as offering a mix of academics, extra-curricular and fun activities, with options for students at different Mandarin fluency levels, including beginners and fluent or near-fluent students. Parents report that students participate in Chinese calligraphy, singing songs in Chinese, skits in Chinese, and conversation in Mandarin, along with homework help, art activities, snack, and outdoor time. Testimonials also mention extra classes such as art, science, basketball, piano, violin, computer coding, and abacus, and describe the abacus class as enabling advanced mental calculations. Parents describe teachers as energetic, enthusiastic, nurturing, highly experienced, and “super nice,” and note that children enjoy attending, like their teachers, and spend afternoons there with friends and teachers. One parent notes that school homework is treated as a top priority with tutoring support as needed, and another highlights improvement in a child’s writing after attending a writing class at ICEC.
