About
Brooke Carlson Equestrian Center offers trail riding, camping, riding lessons, after school horsemanship, show lessons, and show training. The program includes equestrian training that ranges from beginner riding lessons to professional horsemanship and preparation for national competitions.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
The program is led by Brooke Carlson. Brooke has been training horses and riders in various competitive equestrian divisions since age 14, including Park, Open English, Western, Country to Hunter, Sport Horse, Dressage, Trail, Professional Horsemanship, Ranch Riding, Equitation, Reining, Showmanship, and all forms of Equitation. Brooke started riding at age 4, entered a first competition at age 9, and by age 14 was ranked 4th in the state with a Quarter Horse named Shicombe. Brooke apprenticed for four years in training Arabians and purchased the ranch in Morgan Hill, California, in 1988, which became the home of Brooke Carlson Equestrian Center. Brooke frequently shows at the Canadian, US, and Youth Nationals with riders ranging in age from 4 to 85.
In 2020, Brooke’s youth clients earned 15 Top Ten placings at Youth Nationals, and there have been ten placings at US Youth Nationals in six divisions out of twenty classes. The center’s mission statement describes a focus on delivering a riding experience that is fun, engaging youth with horses, and welcoming new people based on a shared love of horses and riding. Brooke has been active in local FFA, 4-H, and horse youth groups, volunteering time to involve youth in individual and group activities that teach animal husbandry and life responsibilities.
One parent testimonial describes a child diagnosed with autism who began riding at the center in October 2020 and experienced improvements in language, following directions, focus, recognizing people and details, and expressing wants and needs during riding sessions. The same parent states that the child looks forward to sessions and that riding at Brooke’s ranch has made a significant positive change in their life. Another statement from the program describes the community as seeing themselves as a family that welcomes new people based on a shared love of horses and riding.
