About

The Mentor Tutor Connection Tutor Program offers one-on-one tutoring on a desired subject, typically math or language arts, along with academic support in reading, math, or general homework assistance. Tutors volunteer in classrooms and after school, helping with basic skills including reading, math, science, writing, class projects, workload management, and organizational skills. The program also includes in-class small groups, silent reading time, and after school homework clubs where students work on math challenges and reading comprehension skills.

• Ages: 5–14 years old
• Schedule: Tutoring is provided during school hours, with sessions lasting 30 minutes to 1 hour; elementary school tutors meet once or twice a week during the school year, and homework clubs meet after school on school campuses.

Mentor Tutor Connection’s tutoring program provides individualized attention to students and assists local schools in meeting students’ unique needs. Homework Clubs meet with elementary school students after school on school campuses to work on math challenges and reading comprehension skills, and elementary school tutoring sessions are supervised by teachers or school administrators. Middle school tutors work with students during study hall or after school, and middle school is described as a time of transition and maturation where tutors also serve as mentors by providing guidance, encouragement, and modeling responsibility while supporting students’ interests and personal growth. All MTC tutors must have graduated high school, and staff and volunteers undergo annual youth protection training in compliance with the laws and guidelines set forth by the MVLA School District, the Los Altos School District, the Mountain View Whisman School District, the County of Santa Clara, and the State of California. MTC places volunteer tutors in Los Altos and Mountain View schools from kindergarten through 8th grade, and MTC mentors work with students who attend the three high schools of the Mountain View Los Altos High School District. MTC’s programs are described as helping students achieve their potential and thrive, and are described as designed to help underserved students in the community maximize their potential and succeed. MTC is funded by donations from individuals in the community and grants from supporting organizations, and in partnership with local schools, MTC staff screen, train, place, and support volunteers.
