About

The Tutor Program focuses on one-on-one and small group support in reading, math, science, writing, and homework assistance. Students may work on math challenges, reading comprehension skills, class projects, workload management, organizational skills, and silent reading time. Tutors serve as academic helpers and sources of support and encouragement, and middle school tutors also serve as mentors who provide guidance, encouragement, and model responsibility while supporting students’ interests and personal growth.

• Ages: 5–13 years old
• Schedule: Tutoring is provided during school hours, with Homework Clubs meeting after school; elementary school tutors meet once or twice a week, and middle school tutors work with students during study hall or after school; sessions last 30 minutes to 1 hour.

MTC’s tutoring program provides individualized attention to students, with one-on-one tutoring typically in math or language arts. Tutors volunteer in classrooms and after school, and sessions are supervised by teachers or school administrators. Tutoring is provided either in person or online via Zoom or GoogleMeet during school hours, and Homework Clubs and elementary school tutoring take place on school campuses, with middle school tutors working with students during study hall or after school on school campuses. Tutors receive instruction and guidance from classroom teachers or administrators, as well as training and resources from MTC, and MTC staff are always available for additional feedback and advice.

All MTC tutors must have graduated high school, and MTC staff and volunteers undergo annual youth protection training conducted in compliance with the laws and guidelines set forth by the MVLA School District, the Los Altos School District, the Mountain View Whisman School District, the County of Santa Clara, and the State of California. All MTC Tutors must have graduated high school. The minimum tutor commitment is one school year, with preferred tutor availability from October through May. Mentor Tutor Connection is a 501(c)(3) non-profit with the mission of “Helping Students Achieve Their Potential and Thrive.”

MTC places volunteer tutors in Los Altos and Mountain View schools from kindergarten through 8th grade, and MTC mentors work with students who attend the three high schools of the Mountain View Los Altos High School District. MTC tutors work with students at local elementary and middle schools in the Los Altos School District and the Mountain View Whisman School District. In partnership with local schools, MTC staff screen, train, place, and support volunteers, placing almost 200 volunteers who work directly with more than 450 students in schools each year. MTC is funded by donations from individuals in the community and through grants from supporting organizations.
