Aim High Summer is designed for current 5th–8th grade middle school students who have limited access to summer academic enrichment programs and is committed to a multi-summer learning experience beginning in 5th grade through 8th grade, with students expected to attend consecutive summers throughout middle school. The program’s STEM class encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity through designing and building projects that solve real-world problems, while the Humanities class focuses on reading, writing, thinking about, and discussing contemporary issues to develop communication and literacy skills. The Issues & Choices class provides age-appropriate lessons and activities to explore identity, develop social emotional skills, and create plans for the future, and the program uses Advisory and Activities/Enrichment as regular parts of the day. Aim High Summer is guided by CORE values of Community, Opportunity, Respect, and High Expectations, and uses restorative practices to prevent and respond to conflict, harm, and wrong-doing, with behavior expectations and interventions rooted in these practices and an emphasis on an inclusive and supportive learning environment. One Aim High parent described the program as “a lifeline for me as a working parent,” noting that communication has been easy, program offerings have been great, and that their child enjoyed the instructors, new sports, enrichment opportunities, and experiencing middle school-style transitions between classes and mentorship.
