Napa Valley Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was first established as a gym in 2007, and NV Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has become a staple in the Napa Valley martial arts community. NV BJJ’s mission is to create and foster a positive, light-hearted environment where students can gather, train, and share knowledge about grappling, and to give students the opportunity to build mental and physical strength to overcome obstacles in life. The school is the official California affiliate for the Demian Maia Jiu-Jitsu association and has multiple Demian Maia black belts on its instructor team. The leadership team includes Jesse Garcia, the head instructor at NV BJJ; founder Saul Escalera, who passed the school on to Jesse; and Jiu-Jitsu legend Demian Maia, with whom the school affiliated in 2016. Jesse Garcia achieved a 3rd degree brown belt in Judo and received his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt in 2016. Brandyn Healer has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since late 2009 and received his black belt from Demian Maia in July of 2018. Chris Musante competed at a national level in Tae Kwon Do for many years and received his black belt from Demian Maia in July of 2018. The core of instructors has been training collaboratively for almost a decade, and they represent a wide range of styles and body types. NV BJJ has students from many walks of life, including entrepreneurs, bankers, musicians, artists, and lawyers, which creates a diverse training community. The program states that it welcomes individuals of all skill levels and focuses on maintaining a positive environment.
Testimonials describe the instruction as top notch, with welcoming instructors and students and tough training that shows solid technique. Visiting students, including black belts and travelers, report that the environment feels welcoming and that the instruction shows great technique, communication, and attention to detail. One testimonial notes that the instructor is straightforward and makes students feel welcome, and that students are respectful regardless of another student’s level or knowledge.
