Napa Valley Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was first established as a gym in 2007. NV BJJ’s mission is to create and foster a positive, light-hearted environment where students can gather, train, and share knowledge about grappling, and to give students the opportunity to build mental and physical strength to overcome obstacles in life. NV Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has rooted itself in the heart of Napa for over a decade and is described as a staple in the Napa Valley martial arts community.
The founder, Saul Escalera, legitimized the school and started teaching on a nightly basis after previously training under Ralph Gracie since the early 1990s. Jesse Garcia is the head instructor at NV BJJ, took over the school from Saul, has trained Muay Thai and Boxing, achieved a 3rd degree brown belt in Judo, received his Black Belt in 2016, and was an avid competitor who faced many top names in his career. He is also an Estate Manager at a premier Napa Valley winery. Black Belt instructors include Brandyn Healer, who has been training BJJ since late 2009, received his Black Belt from Demian Maia in July of 2018, and has competed in some of the biggest tournaments in the U.S., and Chris Musante, who comes from a historied competitive martial arts background, competed at a national level in Tae Kwon Do for many years, and after over a decade of training received his Black Belt from Demian Maia in July of 2018. The core of instructors have been training collaboratively for almost a decade, and there are multiple Demian Maia Black Belts at NV BJJ.
NV Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the official California affiliate for the Demian Maia Jiu-Jitsu association. The program describes a positive environment that welcomes individuals of all skill levels, with students from many walks of life, including entrepreneurs, bankers, musicians, artists, and lawyers, creating a diverse community.
Testimonials describe the instruction as top notch, with a welcoming environment and respectful students. One visiting Jiu-Jitsu black belt from East Lansing, Michigan, reported that the environment felt like his own academy and that the rolls were tough, proving solid technique. Other visitors described the instruction as high quality with great technique, communication, and attention to detail, and noted that both the instructor and students were very welcoming. Another testimonial described the environment as great, with a straightforward instructor who makes students feel welcome and respectful students regardless of level or knowledge.
