The studio also offers seasonal art camps, birthday parties, Parent & Me classes, nature journaling classes, and custom artwork.
• Ages: 2–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options are offered on weekdays and Saturdays, with specific Children's Fine Art, Teen / Adult Fine Art, Teen Fine Art, and Adult Fine Art Class times that vary by day and location, and class times are subject to change due to enrollment.
• Price: Great state of the art classes at affordable prices.
Picasso's Playmates is described as a full service art studio for all ages, where everyone is encouraged to create their own special art piece in a fun, clean, and safe place. The program offers a free introductory art lesson for fine art classes only and uses a step-by-step process to drawing and painting. Children's Fine Art Classes for ages 5 to 12 and Teen Fine Art Classes for ages 13 to 18 use an atelier style program with a step-by-step process used by the masters, and the first medium at the child level is pastel. Teen learners are taught to see the world as a puzzle and learn the shapes and lines that make that puzzle whole, and some teen students go on to Cal Arts, Otis, and SCAD for further art education. Adult learners can choose from charcoal/pastel, watercolor, oil painting, or color pencil/ink/marker. The Parent Participation Class is a child-directed, open-ended art class where children make Picasso-style art, start with Play Doh, move into themed art projects that change throughout the year, wash in their own bucket of soapy water, and watch the train go by daily, though these Parent Participation classes are not currently offered. Nature Journaling Classes include a short walk for botanical and wildlife observations and a visit to the park's long-time animal residents, and participants are told that at the beginning they only need to bring themselves and a desire to learn and have fun.
Miss Paula Bradley has been teaching for over 40 years, including 25 years specifically teaching art, and Miss Chelsea has been teaching for 11 years after having been part of Miss Paula's art class since age seven. The leadership team includes art teachers Miss Paula Bradley and Miss Chelsea. The program’s stated mission is to support creativity and positivity, to treat art as essential, and to reach the community with the joy of creating with “heART.” The program states that art lessons are an investment in the future, that art is the cornerstone of civilization and important for representing innovations, and that anyone can learn to draw and paint at any age.
Picasso's Playmates has community involvement through a Parent Participation Class offered through the City of Santa Clarita Recreational Services, and students have entered art pieces in a community art show. According to the program, students entered two art pieces in the community art show and received prizes. Parent testimonials describe Paula as patient, kind, humorous, creative, and a wonderful instructor, and note that children’s progress is visible in their pastel portfolios and that the price is very reasonable. One parent reports that a ten-year-old child enjoyed being guided in creativity and techniques without feeling uncomfortable, and another parent with three children describes Paula as loving and helpful, focusing on foundational art techniques while allowing personal creativity. A long-time student describes the experience as “It’s not art class, it’s life class, but you get to paint,” and mentions that Paula emphasizes problem solving, independent thinking, diligence, listening, and communication skills.
