About

National League of Young Men (NLYM) is a structured program for mothers and their sons in grades 9–12 that includes leadership involvement, charitable and community service, cultural experiences, and protocol education. Young men participate in activities such as mentoring and tutoring at the after school tutoring program Kids Connect, assembling school pencil boxes, and taking part in class philanthropy events and cultural events with their class. They also engage in specific service projects such as making meals and providing snack lunches for feeding the homeless, bowling and sharing pizza and drinks with students of the High Hopes Head Injury Program, visiting CHOC to provide fun and companionship to child patients through Lego building, remote control car races, decorating bags, frames, and donuts or cupcakes, and working on refurbishing, painting, cleaning, repairing, and furnishing apartments for Human Options Second Step and Third Step.

• Ages: 14–18 years old

During meetings, young men learn time management, leadership, relationship building, protocol, social etiquette, and skills in communications, team building, and follow-through, and young men officers run their class meetings and hold positions on their board of directors each year. Members have volunteered for causes including Special Olympics, The American Cancer Society, Second Harvest Food Bank, High Hopes, The U.S. Army, local soup kitchens, fire stations, senior centers, and youth groups, and they provide gently used clothing and no-tie blankets and engage attendees in activities like Bingo with prizes while feeding the homeless. The organization conducts home improvement days for Human Options Second Step and Third Step for families escaping abusive relationships and assembles and delivers school pencil boxes to Newport Mesa Unified School District in-need elementary schools. National League of Young Men, Inc. states a mission of promoting the development of young men into community leaders through leadership involvement, charitable and community service, cultural experiences, and protocol education, and it states a commitment to fostering and valuing inclusion and diversity and to cultivating compassion and respect for every individual in the communities in which members live and serve.

National League of Young Men, Inc. (initially named Beach City Service League) was founded in 2007 in Newport Beach, California, by Diane Edmonston and Mary Pat Lucas, and launched its first year with the Newport Mesa Chapter including grades nine and ten, totaling 43 high school young men and 42 mothers. Within two years, the Newport Mesa Chapter grew to four classes including grades nine through twelve, and a second chapter was started in Greater Orange; in 2009, when additional communities asked how to start a chapter, the name was changed to National League of Young Men, Inc. and a National Board of Directors was created. The Newport Mesa Chapter was founded in 2007 and changed its name to the National League of Young Men in September 2011, and mothers in the chapter meet five times a year to conduct chapter business. Chapter membership is subject to space availability, and prospective members must be sponsored by an Active Member in an NLYM Chapter, secure a sponsor and co-sponsor from the local chapter by the set deadline, and apply during a window from mid-November through mid-December prior to the eligible year.

The program is described as a structured program for mothers and their sons with a focus on leadership, service, culture, and protocol opportunities, and young men are encouraged to serve in at least two leadership roles during their membership. National League of Young Men, Inc. states that it is committed to providing a quality program and developing long-term partnerships that benefit young men and their surrounding communities and aspires to offer young men gratifying experiences that help them learn that one of the greatest joys in life comes from serving others.
