About
Newport Beach Aikido (Newport Beach Aikikai Dojo) offers adults classes, children’s classes, morning, lunch, evening, and weekend classes, as well as weapons classes that include training with bokken (wooden sword), jo (staff), and tanto (knife). The program also offers aikido seminars and corporate wellness sessions, and all classes include weapons training that blends hand techniques with weapons practice. Every session teaches timing, distance, and direction.

Newport Beach Aikido (Newport Beach Aikikai Dojo) is led by chief instructor Gentil Pennewaert Shihan, 7th Dan, whose credentials are recognized by the World Aikido Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan and the United States Aikido Federation Headquarters. Newport Beach Aikikai is proud to be a member of the USAF Aikido Federation since 1987 and is proudly affiliated with the United States Aikido Federation for over thirty years. The dojo leadership and affiliations include Aikido Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba at Aikido Hombu Dojo in Japan and Yoshimitsu Yamada, 8th Dan, Shihan, president of the United States Aikido Federation, among other senior instructors listed as part of its extended leadership network. The dojo states that it is dedicated to offering the highest level of aikido training and continues the legacy first started in Japan during the last century by the founder Ueshiba Morihei.
The dojo describes itself as a world class dojo made up of a cosmopolitan and diverse group of students and notes that all classes are suitable for beginners through advanced students. Facility amenities include showers, a large canvas practice mat, and changing rooms with private lockers. The program also offers the Aikido Mastery Channel with unlimited access to instructional videos via monthly membership, and membership to this channel is tax deductible through sponsorship by the Orange County Beach Cities Aikido Foundation (OCBCAF). Newport Beach Aikido is described as Orange County’s #1 rated Aikido dojo and is hosting the Sugano Shihan Summer Camp 2026 on June 6–7, 2026, led by G. Pennewaert Shihan, 7th Dan Aikikai.
