Oakdale Mixed Martial Arts Academy was established in 1988 as the Oakdale Kajukenbo Self-Defense Club and is now teaching third generation students. It is the result of 35 years of work and study in the martial arts and has grown into one of the leading academies in the valley, with additional schools in Merced and Sonora. Professor Tom Theofanopoulos, founder of Oakdale MMA and creator of the Last Stand Fight Team, was promoted to 8th Degree Red/Black Belt and the title of “Professor” in 2006 by Great Grand Master Charles Gaylord of the Kajukenbo Association of America, and was promoted to Black Belt in 2008 by Master Flavio. In 2014, Oakdale MMA was voted “top MMA gym” by Cali Fight Awards, and Professor Tom received a lifetime achievement award.

The academy’s mission is not to produce better fighters but to produce better citizens, and it emphasizes “community first.” Oakdale MMA has given scholarships to kids in need who cannot afford lessons and has held fundraisers for families facing hardship or illness, as well as for organizations including the Make-A-Wish Foundation, St. Jude’s, and Toys for Tots. Oakdale MMA has created champions in many areas of martial arts, including junior Olympic competitors in judo, jiujitsu junior world champions, kickboxing champions, and professional and amateur MMA champions. In 2007, Professor Tom created the Last Stand Fight Team for professional fighters from all three academies, and in nine years these fighters earned over 40 championship titles, with a Corinthian (Spartan) helmet displayed on the front of their shirts.

Parents have shared that the toddler course includes teaching about when it is appropriate to fight, respect for all people, the right to defend themselves, and the importance of exercise, and they describe Professor Tom as having a gift for teaching and coaching. Other parents and students describe the academy as having top-of-the-line coaching, a family atmosphere, kind and friendly people, highly skilled instructors, and a place their children enjoy attending, with one parent noting increased confidence and a positive experience.
