Girls Inc. of Alameda County’s mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. The organization offers a continuum of academic, leadership, and wellness programs from transitional kindergarten through early career that are designed for girls and their allies and use research-based, relevant, and field-tested curricula. Programs include mentoring relationships with trained adult staff and volunteers and use motivating, deliberate, and interactive skill-building activities, along with continuous programming and personal connections. The environment is described as pro-girl and physically, socially, and emotionally welcoming, with purposeful and strategic programs that meet the unique needs of girls and their allies.

Girls Inc. of Alameda County was founded in 1958 as the first Girls Club in Northern California and has worked with and on behalf of girls and their allies for more than 65 years. It is a nonprofit organization serving Oakland and the East Bay and has partnered with the Smithsonian Institute to engage youth in Democracy in Dialogue, a national curriculum. Unique program elements include the College Access Now (CAN) program, an Expanded Learning Apprenticeship, a mock trial experience led by U.S. District Judge Rita F. Lin, and a fireside chat with Justice Kelli Evans of the California Supreme Court. One 5th grade participant shared, “My favorite part of after school this year is that we got a lot of fun activities and the friends I made.”
