• Ages: 5–18 years old

Girls Inc. of Alameda County was founded in 1958 as the first Girls Club in Northern California and has been working with and on behalf of girls and their allies for over 65 years. Its mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. The organization is a nonprofit serving Oakland and the East Bay and responds to the unique needs of girls and their allies in the East Bay with less access to educational, social, and financial resources. It offers a continuum of academic, leadership, and wellness programs from transitional kindergarten through early career, using research-based programming and relevant, field-tested curricula. Programs include mentoring relationships with trained adult staff and volunteers, motivating and interactive skill-building activities, and continuous programming and personal connections. The environment is described as pro-girl, physically, socially, and emotionally welcoming, where participants are taken seriously and encouraged to be their full selves. Corporate partners are described as committed to increasing access and opportunities for all girls and their allies, and community members in the Bay Area are invited to contribute their time and talent.

A 5th grade participant shared that their favorite part of after school was the fun activities and the friends they made. Another participant, Cataleyah, who is headed to 6th grade, described attending Girls Inc. of Alameda County’s summer camp at Concordia Park since kindergarten and talked about being paired with another girl named Gia for a “pair and share” activity on her first day.
