About

Mr. D's Music Club offers kids a mix of singing, dancing, acting, art, group performances, and participation in a theatrical musical production. Each summer camp week features a different theme, and every week wraps up with a performance for friends and family.

• Ages: 8–14 years old
• Schedule: Summer camps run in June and July, with themed one-week sessions and an after-school performing arts program from February 2 to April 25, 2026

Mr. D's Music Club started with one week of summer camp in 2011 and has been recognized by Oakland and East Bay families since 2014. The program connects kids with professional Teaching Artists and offers award-winning after-school programs and summer camps, with financial aid available. A Jr LIT and LIT Program is offered for ages 13 and 14. During COVID, the program transitioned to live online creative arts programs through The Creative Spaces.

Stephen Duffy, the owner of Mr. D's Music Club, is an award-winning singer, songwriter, composer, and producer with more than twenty years in the music business in Britain and California. He has recorded and/or produced over a hundred albums, has been commissioned to compose for theater, dance, and video, and served as a Music Director at several Bay Area schools for 10 years.

Mr. D's Music Club describes itself as a collaborative, arts-based community that brings Teaching Artists and curious kids together to “Keep Kids Inspired.” The program states that it focuses on creativity without the pressure of perfection, building confidence, fostering friendships, and making sure each child feels seen, heard, and connected. It welcomes all experience levels, embraces each child's individuality, and emphasizes confidence through fun and artistic risk-taking rather than perfection, in an inclusive and supportive environment that is described as challenging yet fun and different from school.

Parent testimonials describe the summer camp as a highlight of the year, with one parent noting that their child preferred Mr. D's Music Club over an international trip. Other parents report that participation in the theatrical musical production has been associated with growth in self-awareness, self-confidence, positive self-image, and accountability, and describe the camp vibe as sweet and inclusive, embracing imperfection and encouraging kids of all backgrounds and abilities. One parent notes that there is “a little bit of everything” from singing to dancing and different genres of music, and describes communication from the program as quick and responsive.
