Oakland Soccer Club has been playing soccer in Oakland since 1974 and was originally founded as a community recreation program in 1974 by the owners of the Oakland-based Jade Soccer Store. Its mission is to provide affordable, high-quality opportunities for underserved youth in Oakland to develop skills for soccer, school and life. The club describes itself as a community first club that exists to provide opportunities for people to develop through soccer regardless of playing ability, age, or economic resources, and it states that it is committed to high level achievement both on and off the field. The club states that it seeks to support its members as they strive to succeed in sport, school and life, works with players to build life skills through soccer, and is 100 percent committed to leveling the playing field for the underserved players it serves. Oakland Soccer Club’s vision is to remove the pay-to-play barriers restricting the youth of Oakland from participation in soccer and developing to their highest level, with core values of Inclusivity, Affordability, Player Development, Lifelong Learning, and Respect.
The club notes that it focuses on challenges including pay-to-play costs, lack of reliable transportation, the digital divide, and lack of safe spaces to play, and that it has worked closely with partners to implement safe spaces, including parks and green space for recreational and athletic play, in order to build social capital and strengthen community bonds. Oakland Soccer Club states that, along with its community, it has endured well documented and historical challenges that marginalized peoples of color have often faced in Oakland and has remained steadfast in its service to youth and families. The club prepares to assume stewardship of an existing parks and recreation facility at Oakport Soccer Fields and has committed to substantial capital improvements to upgrade the fields and structures. Oakland Soccer Club was awarded the bid for Oakport Soccer Fields. The club also states that no dogs are permitted at soccer games or practices.
