Growth Mindset Collective - Jiu Jitsu & Homeschool Enrichment is led by husband and wife founders Mark Miller, Head Jiu Jitsu Coach, and Sabrina Smith, Homeschool Program Director. Coach Mark has been training for over 20 years, teaching since 2009, and earned his black belt under 5x World Champion Eduardo Rocha, a direct student of Royler Gracie. He has taught across the Bay Area at academies including Six Blades Oakland, Gracie Fighter Brentwood, Tapout Fitness in Alameda, and 610 Academy in Richmond, and has spent more than a decade teaching and over two decades training in Richmond, Oakland, and Berkeley. Sabrina pursued a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology and became a collegiate-level teacher in health, wellness, and movement.
The program offers premium semi-private courses with a maximum of 10 students per class, as well as large group membership classes with a bigger team atmosphere. Kids Jiu Jitsu is grouped by grade level, and the Kids Anti-Bullying Program is part of the offerings. The facility is described as being designed for focus, learning, and connection, with every student known, coached, and challenged at their level, and a training culture built around respect, presence, and progress. Family-friendly classes allow adults and children to learn and train together, and a weekly newsletter shares training tips, parent support tools, events and announcements, Coach Mark’s stories, mindset and motivation, and new blog and video content.
Growth Mindset Collective states that it is about more than learning techniques and that its mission is to foster personal growth through martial arts and education, encouraging confidence, discipline, and lifelong learning. It is described as a top-rated Jiu Jitsu academy in Oakley, CA. The founders chose to return to Oakley to raise and homeschool their kids and to build something meaningful for families in the community. One parent testimonial notes that a child gained confidence and discipline both on the mat and in homeschool studies after joining, and mentions the supportive environment.
