Pro Kids, First Tee – San Diego states that its mission is to challenge underserved youth to excel in life by promoting character development, life skills, and values through education and the game of golf. Pro Kids was founded in 1994 by former AFL/NFL player Ernest H. Wright, Sr., and it became a charter member of First Tee in 1998. A second location was opened in Oceanside in 2012, the Ely Callaway Golf & Learning Center opened on August 29, 2012, and The Honors Course opened in March 2013. Pro Kids reports that it has been providing opportunities for more than 30 years and that more than 25,000 kids’ lives have been transformed since 1994 through values intrinsic to the game of golf, including honesty, confidence, and respect. Since its inception in 1999, more than $3 million in scholarships has been awarded to Pro Kids Scholars, many of whom are the first in their family to pursue higher education.
Pro Kids is part of First Tee, an international youth development organization founded by the PGA and other associations to advance the game of golf. Callaway Golf committed $2 million to help build the Ely Callaway Golf & Learning Center, and TaylorMade committed $1 million for the facility’s golf course. The Honors Course was honored by the American Society of Golf Course Architects. Pro Kids serves as a welcoming home to kids across San Diego with primary program locations in City Heights and Oceanside, and 54% of enrolled youth receive income-based or military status scholarships covering program membership fees. The Oceanside facility’s space, including an outdoor patio and six-hole course, is available for special events and other public meetings.
