Reading Reach Literacy Center offers reading and spelling tutoring, dyslexia intervention, homeschool enrichment classes, and summer programs. Students take part in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and spelling instruction, including an Orton-Gillingham structured literacy intensive summer class. The center also provides a dyslexia screener and literacy evaluation that assesses multiple measures of reading and spelling.
• Ages: 5–13 years old
• Schedule: One-on-one reading and spelling tutoring 1–2 times per week for 45 minutes each; dyslexia intervention at least twice per week for 45 minutes each; homeschool enrichment classes meet two mornings per week, with a minimum commitment of one semester for all ongoing services.
Reading Reach became a licensed business in 2021. The program’s approach is grounded in the science of reading and uses evidence-based instruction implemented by trained teachers, with a specialty in structured literacy and Orton-Gillingham reading intervention. The center offers one-on-one structured literacy lessons and dyslexia intervention based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, as well as homeschool enrichment classes with an emphasis on reading and writing and a summer Orton-Gillingham structured literacy intensive class based on the science of reading.
The leadership team includes founder and CEO Julie Herd, M.S., C-SLCT, A/OGA, a Reading and Dyslexia Intervention Specialist who is Orton-Gillingham certified at the Associate level by the Orton-Gillingham Academy, and COO Matt Herd, an Orton-Gillingham trained tutor. The staff includes highly trained and background-checked teachers delivering evidence-based instruction, including specialists with master’s degrees in education, reading and literacy, and educational psychology, multiple-subject teaching credentials, Orton-Gillingham training through the Orton-Gillingham Academy and IMSE, LETRS training, structured literacy training, and dyslexia-specific training through the CA Dyslexia Initiative and the UC/CSU California Collaborative for Neurodiversity and Learning.
Reading Reach Literacy Center has been named Oceanside's Best Tutoring Service in 2024, 2025, and 2026, and North San Diego County's top-ranked tutoring business in 2024, 2025, and 2026. Administrators are members of The International Dyslexia Association and The Orton-Gillingham Academy and are founding members of The Reading League California. Founder Julie Herd was recognized as a Literacy Champion by the John Corcoran Foundation, received Nessy’s Teacher of the Year – Dyslexia Aware award in 2024 (1st place in the United States and 3rd globally), and in 2025 was nominated again for Nessy's Science of Reading Teacher of the Year and selected as an Honorable Mention winner for Learning Ally's Winslow Coyne Reitnouer Excellence in Education Award.
