For more than 50 years, Coast Soccer League has operated as a competitive soccer league in Southern California and describes itself as the oldest and most successful competitive soccer league in the region. CSL states that it has over 170 clubs and thousands of players, coaches, officials, and families, and that it remains an independent league open to the whole soccer community. CSL describes its goal as providing a “Five-Star” experience and uses a Five-Star Recognition Program to engage the community in setting a higher standard of sideline culture and sportsmanship. The league also runs a Player of the Month initiative that recognizes players, supports coaches in motivating players, and allows clubs to highlight the development of life skills, and notes that it is the only league that offers these types of programs.
CSL operates an “open” system and runs a true open pyramid with promotion and relegation, and states that this structure maximizes development by giving every child a clear growth and development pathway regardless of starting point. The league notes that it prioritizes all levels of clubs and teams and is built for all pathways, including soccer and life skills. Every spring and fall, CSL hosts the CSL League Cup as an additional competition on top of the regular league season, free for all teams in the regular season. CSL also reports that it has earned the distinction of having the most national championships of any league in the nation.
The league’s mission statement says that soccer offers value beyond making a person a better player or athlete and that the game is a platform to build character, foster positive values, and develop important life skills. CSL states that it believes the game teaches teamwork, humility, respect, resilience, and grit, and that these benefits are available to all players and desirable to every family. The mission emphasizes principles such as “Soccer Unites,” “Character First,” “The Rule of Fun,” “The Game Can Take You There,” “Well-Being,” and “We Are Family Strong,” and states that living by these principles will provide the best possible experience for the entire soccer community.
CSL uses technology that includes the CSL App and its feedback systems, which provide access to schedules, standings, news, rosters, and the Five-Star rating system at all times. The organization describes itself as more than a league, calling it a community with a proud history and a clear future.
Leadership roles in Coast Soccer League include a Chairperson for Boys Competition 8–13 (Mike Benjamin), a Chairperson for Girls Competition 8–13 (Andy Hernandez), a Chairperson for Boys Competition 14–19 (Christie Paulson), and a Chairperson for Girls Competition 14–19 (Terry Wilson). Additional listed contacts include Roma Klein for general questions about the league such as payments, registration, and picking up t-shirts or medals, schedulers for questions about scheduling issues, and CSL Premier for questions regarding CSL Premier.
