About

The Orange Home Grown Youth Food Literacy Program is a nine month course where high school students take part in hands-on regenerative farming and engage in the entire food production cycle, from seed to dinner table, and beyond. Participants can borrow seeds for their garden, return seeds to share with others in the community, and take part in seed donations through the Orange Seed Lending Library. The program also includes volunteer opportunities, educational events for all ages, and activities such as clean-up and maintenance of the Robert D. Hoyt Historic Grove and harvesting of the fruit.

• Schedule: Nine month course

The Orange Home Grown Youth Food Literacy Program first began in 2017. It is geared towards providing hands-on learning opportunities to local high school students from the Orange Unified School District (OUSD). The course gives students the tools to make powerful choices related to food, their health, and their future, and offers opportunities for volunteering and potential job experiences after the program ends. The City of Orange and the Orange Home Grown Foundation partner together to support the clean-up and maintenance of the Robert D. Hoyt Historic Grove, along with the harvesting of the fruit. The Hart Park Grove Gleaning Program harvests about 10,000 lbs of citrus annually, which gets donated to Abound Food Care to support those in need while helping to reduce food waste. The Orange Seed Lending Library is created in partnership with the Orange Public Library Foundation, and the Orange Home Grown Education Farm is a collaborative space open to anyone who wants to put their hands in the soil.

The Orange Home Grown mission is to foster environmental and holistic health by creating educational programs and spaces that promote sustainability, food justice, and community engagement. The organization is committed to offering resources and opportunities that empower individuals to make informed decisions about food and its environmental impact, with the hope of enriching the community while changing how people measure the value of food and the impacts it has on lives and the environment.
