SoCal Swords Historical Fencing School offers HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) with training in the use of historical swords and other martial implements. Students practice early German longsword through drilling, cutting, interpreting historical manuals, tournaments, self-defense, and sword fighting. Training uses synthetic or blunted training tools and protective gear for safety.
• Schedule: Year-round martial arts classes with options between 10:30am and 10:30pm on weekdays and daytime to evening hours on weekends
Founded in 2021, SoCal Swords Historical Fencing School is a dedicated HEMA school and shop that specializes in early German longsword and provides high-quality, affordable HEMA gear. Equipment selection is curated by seasoned HEMA practitioners and instructors, and cutting is a core aspect of training. The program’s approach centers its philosophy of HEMA as the study and practice of a historical martial art rather than a sporting match. SCS instructors have extensive experience in all areas of HEMA, from in-depth studies of the historical manuals that inform their techniques to translating those skills to fighting and medaling in tournaments. RJ McKeehan founded his own company in 2021. The school encourages both instructors and students to compete to test and expand their skills, learn from other participants, and connect with other fighters and schools.
