Sandy Days Kids Camp was founded in 2009 and has operated for more than 17 years, now in its 18th season, with an impeccable safety record for more than 17 years. The camp follows California, Los Angeles County, and American Camp Association guidelines and states that camper safety is the most important part of its job, with a focus on a secure environment, safety as the top priority, and a goal of helping every camper grow with confidence, kindness, and curiosity and have the best summer ever. The program was founded to bring a lifelong passion for the outdoors and child development to life and describes itself as a camp where kids can explore, create, and grow freely, and as a lifestyle of slowing down, enjoying the outdoors, and building friendships that last beyond summer.
The camp maintains a 6:1 camper-to-counselor ratio (also described as a 1:6 counselor-to-camper ratio), with counselors in blue rash guards and campers in bright yellow. The team is trained in ocean safety, emergency response, child supervision, environmental awareness, ocean awareness, and sun protection, and follows structured sun-care and hydration practices. Before each season, all staff complete 16 hours of specialized training, with ongoing education throughout the summer. Many counselors are local teachers, coaches, and childcare professionals, and the staff is described as a mix of veteran teachers and enthusiastic counselors.
The leadership team includes Founder and Director Sina Monjazeb, Assistant Camp Director David “Hippie” Emeson, and Arts & Crafts Director Robyn Mitsch. Sina Monjazeb has a background in human development and education, earned a B.A. in Kinesiology: Physical Education from Cal State Long Beach, and worked as a physical education teacher and later as an athletic director for nearly two decades. David Emeson has a background in theater. Robyn Mitsch has a degree in Special Education from Boston University, decades of experience working with children across the U.S., and experience as a teacher, tutor, and nanny, as well as leading arts and crafts at a local beach camp.
Sandy Days Kids Camp is a 2025 “Most Loved” Winner in the Kids Camp/After School Program category by the Santa Monica Daily Press. Many counselors are part of the local community as teachers, coaches, and childcare professionals. Parents in testimonials describe counselors and the owner as warm, welcoming, attentive, enthusiastic, energetic, patient, and caring, and mention that safety is taken seriously, that kids are separated by age group based on how far they go into the water, and that a counselor personally escorts kids after check-in. Multiple parents report their children returning for several years, enjoying games on the sand, surfing and paddle boarding as they become stronger swimmers, and talking about the camp and its staff, including Archie the dog, long after sessions end.
