It is a first-of-its-kind program in the City of Los Angeles and will offer young people with disabilities access to a variety of adaptive sports programming at no cost. The program is described as the single largest commitment to youth sports development in California and serves as a legacy before, during, and after the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It aims to remove barriers to participation for an underserved community, raises awareness of the benefits adaptive sports can offer young people with disabilities, helps achieve a more equitable quality of life, and focuses on fostering a new generation of para-athletes and fans ahead of the LA28 Games.
The PlayLA Adaptive Youth Sports Program is made possible by an investment from the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It is also made possible by LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games. Leadership for the program includes Nick Van Hecke and Kevin Mather. Since 2015, Nick Van Hecke has volunteered and coached for the Triumph Foundation, Angel City Sports, and the Adaptive Sports section within the City of Los Angeles, and he specializes in handcycling, basketball, and rugby.
