STEAM:CODERS offers activities such as coding, robotics, game design, video editing, web design, data science and analytics, and cybersecurity. Students work with tools and languages including Scratch, Python, and JavaScript, and the program includes field trips to places like Nickelodeon and Warner Bros.
• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Sessions run from Monday, June 22 through Saturday, August 8, with separate class times for grades 2–3 and grades 4–6.
STEAM:CODERS started in 2014 and has served more than 60,000 students since it began. The program serves underrepresented and underserved K–12 students and is based in Pasadena, California. About 40% of attendees are Hispanic and 25% are Black, and about 500 kids go through the programs every summer. Classes typically have about 15 to 20 students, and each class is broken into three groups based on pace of learning, with three instructors in a classroom to address the different groups. STEAM:CODERS uses unused computer labs at local universities and has fostered relationships with these institutions. The organization has had an impact on Washington Elementary STEM Magnet School, and learners connect across Pasadena. STEAM:CODERS aims to introduce 1,000,000 students to the fundamentals of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math by 2045. The mission of STEAM:CODERS is “Inspiring underrepresented and underserved students and their families through Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM), in preparation for academic and career opportunities.” Raymond Ealy is the Executive Director and Founder of STEAM:CODERS.
One student, Steven, said, “It was truly a new and long-waited experience to learn a programming language. The course strengthened my desire to pursue computer science. I can add this experience to a college application and I can also practice at home, as well. Thank you so much for this opportunity.” A parent, D. P., shared, “My children really did enjoy the course. It exceeded expectations. I think it provided the spark they needed to do more, especially for my older daughter who did not think technology was her thing. You are doing great work!” Another student, Adrianna, said, “Thank you all for your time in teaching me with your program STEAM (coder class). It was so much fun and I loved learning a lot of the new things about coding. Although I have done some other app programming classes, I think this was the most fun and educational. As if it couldn't get any better, we ate pizza at the end! I really can't wait until the next STEAM class!” A volunteer, Taylor, said, “Your organization has inspired me to spread the love of coding with others around me and for that, I'm incredibly grateful.”
