Sandbar Surf School offers open group surf lessons, private group surf lessons, private lessons, and all-day surf camps. The program also offers couples surf lessons, 3 Day Surf Lesson Bundle Packages, 5 Day Surf Lesson Bundle Packages, surf gear rental, cave and wildlife kayak tours, guided kayak tours, a Surf for PE Program, birthday parties, and corporate events.

Sandbar Surf School was created in 1994 as the ESB Surf School. The leadership team includes owner Jonny Ziegler and surf instructors Shane, Josh, Ryan, Teresa, Sage, Robby, Michael, Ryley, Tyler, Obsidian, Rowan, Cat, Jack, Konnor, Micah, Oliver, and Haley, along with Bucky the surf doggie. The mission states that the school combines specialized instruction and coaching with environmental appreciation, focuses on students having fun in a great and safe environment, and aims for students to learn how to surf, stand up on their own, and progress at their own pace.
Sandbar Surf School provides wetsuits, surf leashes, and soft top surfboards, and emphasizes the “Big Three” items of a surfboard appropriate for the student’s size, a safety surf leash, and a wetsuit. The program offers beginner to advanced surf lessons and notes that 2026 surf lessons and camps are open for booking, with all ages invited and a maximum of 3–4 students per instructor. The school states that it always over-staffs lessons to support safety in the ocean, describes itself as California’s Central Coast’s premier surf school and rental company, and notes that it offers the only Surf for PE Program in the area with local and regional homeschool programs. Sandbar Surf School partners with local community members, The City of Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo County Parks and Recreation Department, Heartland Charter Homeschool, Yosemite Valley Charter Homeschool, Monarch River Academy Homeschool, Adventuras Surfboards, Pancho’s Surf Shop, Sea Venture Hotel and other local hotels, Pismo Coast Village and other local state and county campgrounds. The program has teamed up with Central Coast Kayaks, which is described as the original kayak center from Pismo Beach to Morro Bay. Central Coast Kayaks is the recipient of USA Today’s National Cave Kayak Tours Top Ten list in 2024 and has been named “Best in SLO County” for its guided kayak tours for many years.
Parent and participant testimonials describe instructors as hands-on, friendly, and accommodating, and mention that instructors work with kids and adults of all ages and abilities.
