Since 2003, SHIELD Women's Self Defense System ® has been providing self defense classes for women and girls. Empowerment Summer Camp for Girls follows a structured program for empowerment with weekly topics that include Acceptance, Fear, Responsibility, Perseverance, Confidence, Focus & Self Control, Anti Bullying, and Vision & Purpose. Each day, the camp introduces one extraordinary woman from the past or present and discusses her leadership and achievements with the campers. SHIELD Women's Self Defense System ® was created exclusively for women and girls and is based on a mixture of martial arts principles, self-defense, and street fighting skills, and it incorporates awareness, verbal, and psychological aspects of self defense in the classes.
SHIELD Women's Self Defense System ® has provided self defense training for over 20,000 women and girls in Southern California, and to date, founder Nelson Nio has taught self defense classes for women and girls in the Los Angeles area to over 40,000 participants in major universities, high schools, Fortune 100 companies, private groups, and government entities. Its mission is to empower women and girls, eradicate sexual assault, and even up the playing field through its self-defense training system. SHIELD Women's Self Defense has been featured on a BBC World News documentary program of inspirational people from around the world and has received recognition including “Best of LA People” 2011 by LA Weekly, an award from the Consulate General of Mexico, an honor from Amanecer Community Counseling, and a “Civic Pride” acknowledgment by Glendale News Press.
SHIELD Women's Self Defense was hired to visit the Same District in Tanzania, Africa, to teach self defense classes for women and girls, with daily classes for two weeks for teachers, school principals, students, the police department, survivors of gender-based violence, community educators, and Maasai tribal women, and the program is currently part of the curriculum for 19 schools in Tanzania. Parent testimonials describe changes such as a girl no longer being bullied at school and using skills learned at SHIELD, appreciation for topics and skills seen as crucial for middle school and beyond, and gratitude for a daughter having the confidence and permission to defend herself if needed.
