High Touch High Tech of West Los Angeles states that its mission is to facilitate STEM fun for kids and to expose kids, at an early age, to the world of science and nature. Programs are described as totally hands-on and totally participatory by each child, with experiments structured to use materials that are safe and easy to identify, and many experiments can be duplicated at home with parents. High Touch High Tech programs are aligned with the California Science Content Standards, and many programs can be adapted, upon request, to meet the needs of other grade levels. The program now serves West LA County elementary schools, afterschools, preschools, summer camps, scouts, and Sizzlin' Science Birthday Parties, and brings the science and science materials directly to participants.
Live classes are taught by professional educators who specialize in teaching young children. For in-school field-trips, the scientist and students need desk tops or table tops for hands-on science experiments, desks arranged in groups of four if possible, a chalkboard or dry erase board, and in some cases access to a sink and tap for water. The program also notes that it mails materials for online programs.
Teachers have provided written feedback about the program. One teacher reported that “Students were completely engaged and participated actively in the program.” Another teacher stated, “Really great! The children enjoyed it and learned a lot. It's great to have age-appropriate science programs available.” A multi-grade teacher commented that “All students were actively captivated with the experiment,” and another teacher shared that the scientist “had great rapport with the students and showed a thorough understanding of the science concept,” with all students “actively engaged in every aspects of the lesson.”
