About
Shepherd Sports Youth Basketball / Club Basketball includes basketball activities and devotionals as part of its program. Club players are required to practice as a team at least one day per week, and players are highly encouraged, but not required, to attend devotionals. The program’s AAU option is a higher level, travel team program, and most games take place in or near the San Fernando Valley, with occasional tournaments in other parts of Southern California and Santa Barbara.
• Schedule: Teams have 2 practices a week, Monday through Thursday, and practice times are always 4:15pm–5:45pm.
Shepherd Sports Youth Basketball / Club Basketball is part of Shepherd Sports, which is a ministry of Shepherd Church, a 10,000-member congregation led by Senior Pastor Dudley Rutherford with three campuses in the Greater Los Angeles area. In 2006, Pastor Josh Merrill was hired to launch Shepherd Sports and currently leads its youth, adult, recreation, and fitness programs, and over the past 17 years Shepherd Sports has continued to run sports and recreational programs. The stated mission of Shepherd Sports is to reach those who do not know Christ through the common bond of sports, to offer avenues for the community to participate and serve through sports while building friendships and connecting with the church, and to provide a non-threatening atmosphere where participants can invite friends, neighbors, co-workers, and family members while sharing and growing in the love of God. Programs are open to anyone, and participants do not have to attend Shepherd Church, and Shepherd Sports hosts more than 3,500 participants each year.
Registrations for Shepherd Sports Youth Basketball / Club Basketball can only be completed through the Shepherd Sports online registration system, and programs often use a waiting list once capacity is reached. Missing a week is described as common, and sessions are not prorated or refunded for missed sessions, and sometimes the gym or field is used for other church events, which can create a bye for the sports program. Participants may leave their child during the program but must return before the session ends, and the organization states it is not responsible for athletes who are not currently in session. No one-on-one training is offered at this time. If a family has participated before, they automatically receive email notifications about upcoming programs, and a newsletter sign-up is available for those who have never participated before. Volunteer roles are available, including coach, referee, score-keeper, instructor, set-up and tear down, and prayer team.
