Founded in 2006, Sierra Nevada Journeys bases its outdoor education programs at an Outdoor Education Camp through a partnership that began in 2010, and it purchased this camp in 2020. The organization’s mission is to deliver innovative outdoor, science-based education programs for youth to develop critical thinking skills and to inspire natural resource stewardship. Sierra Nevada Journeys offers a variety of STEM programs that borrow best practices from formal and informal education and engages families through Family STEM Nights. It has positively impacted more than 360,000 children with its science-based education programs, with 58 percent of the students served coming from low-income families and 62 percent being students of color.
Through a partnership with Feather River Land Trust, Sierra Nevada Journeys has received 1,025 acres of permanently conserved land in Plumas County adjacent to its Outdoor Education Camp, which will be protected forever and used to expand outdoor science education. The organization believes that outdoor science education is a necessity, not a luxury. Its leadership team includes Sean Hill, CEO, and Jonathan Mueller, founder.
