dramaworks Youth Programs is part of dramaworks, a non-profit organization founded in 2000 by Earl Thompson and Edie O’Connor. The mission of dramaworks is to promote the enjoyment of theatre arts, facilitate children’s and community theatre programs, and offer an educational path to reduce societal barriers and improve the lives of rural families and children. The youth programming is described as helping young people build self-confidence and develop important life skills, and the community theatre is described as encouraging self-discovery and lifelong learning. Magic Beanstalk Players provides theatrical activities for youth K-8 to express themselves without judgement and to foster self-esteem, collaboration, creative thinking, and problem solving, and individuals of all ages and experience levels can participate as actors, playwrights, costume designers, or stagehands. SWEET offers teens a place to find community.

The West End Theatre, where dramaworks productions take place, opened its doors to the community in 2012 in a building originally constructed in 1875 by William Edwards, later purchased by Jacob Stephan in 1882, and converted in 1940 to W.J. Hamblin’s Plumas Garage with a Shell Gas Station added to the west side. The original structure of the building was preserved in its most recent restoration, and the renovation of the West End Theatre took nearly a decade to complete. The theatre utilizes clean, renewable energy sources, including solar power and geothermal systems, for heating and cooling, and it is described as a traditional black box theatre with an intimate space and cutting-edge design for first-rate performances.

dramaworks is described as offering a safe space for individuals of all ages to learn, grow, and be entertained. Community members have shared that the West End Theatre delivers the quality of big city productions to a small town setting, that it is one of the things they value about living in Plumas County, and that they enjoy buying season tickets and attending productions. Supporters also note that all the youngsters at Magic Beanstalk Players learn what it means that “all the world’s a stage,” and that they have been proud to support the program for years.
