CHAMP Open-Gym Basketball offers open-gym basketball runs along with access to basketball camps and life skills camps. Participants also attend high school, college, and professional basketball games as a group, take part in monthly “lunch & learns” with area professionals, and can receive personal training from basketball trainers.
• Ages: 8–16 years old
• Schedule: Open-gym sessions on Sundays, July 19 and 26, with separate registration for ages 8–12 and ages 13–16
CHAMP is a non-profit organization dedicated to mentoring the youth through a shared love for the game of basketball. The leadership team includes Director Clifton Cooper; Treasurer & Director of Partnerships Sheila Cooper; Secretary Jana Parries; Board Member Monique Nicolas; and Board Member Dr. Carisse Corns. The organization partners with local high schools and colleges to secure dedicated gym time for younger age groups, offers monthly “lunch & learns” with area professionals, and attends local high school, college, and professional basketball games as a group. It also provides scholarships for kids to attend basketball and life skills camps, as well as personal training scholarships from some of the area’s basketball trainers, with a stated objective to acquire the first CHAMP facility and a focus on developing and mentoring the whole child through the game of basketball. The board’s credentials include backgrounds in sociology, social work, youth counseling, college athletics, the mortgage industry, and pediatric dentistry, including a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Carisse Corns.
