About
Palos Verdes Swish Camp is a full day or half-day, week-long basketball camp experience that includes basketball camp sessions with ball handling, defense, passing, and shooting instruction. Campers take part in skill stations, footwork and quickness drills such as foot mazes and mini hurdle training, and three sets of games each day, along with an energized warm-up and supervised lunch. Full-day campers have an afternoon flex period with options that include swimming, watching a sports movie, or joining a mini-clinic in the gym with Coach Jonathan “Coach Z” Zellers, and each camper receives a personalized take-home report and a fun, flexible practice routine to use at home.
• Schedule: Full day or half-day, week-long basketball camp experience
Palos Verdes Swish Camp is led by founder Coach Jonathan Zellers (“Coach Z”), a seasoned player, coach, and educator with decades of basketball expertise, over 15 years of experience coaching and helping lead summer basketball camps, and a master’s degree in education. Coach Z was an elite youth player and starting varsity point guard at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School (class of 2003), has coached at Redondo Union High School and Mary Star By the Sea High School, and spent 15 summers coaching at basketball camps. The staff includes experienced veterans and carefully selected college and high school athletes, and healthy snack options are curated by registered dietician Caitlin Zellers (“Swish Momma”).
The camp’s mission is to inspire young campers to grow both on and off the court by creating an atmosphere of nurture and fun, where every camper feels supported, mistakes are celebrated as opportunities to grow, and confidence is rallied from within, with goals that include building skills, fostering friendships, and strengthening connections within the community. Unique features include grouping campers by age and skill level, the ability to accommodate “wish list” requests for friends or siblings to be on the same team, a daily inspiring life lesson shared by Coach Z, and a focus on both basketball fundamentals and personal growth areas such as teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and gratitude. Swish Camp is founded by Coach Z, a Palos Verdes native and father of two, and is built on a foundation of community spirit that is rooted in Palos Verdes and neighboring communities, provides summer job opportunities for local mentors, offers an affordable, enriching camp experience for families, and brings kids, families, and local mentors together around basketball.
Coach Z’s additional credentials include winning three World Fantasy Basketball Championships (WFBBC), earning the title of RotoGrinders Tournament Player of the Year, appearing on HBO Real Sports, USA Today, and Complex Sports, being featured in the documentary “The Perfect Lineup” as the “DFS Artist,” and being personally thanked by ESPN’s Fantasy Director for his insights on daily fantasy sports. Families have shared feedback such as an 8-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son “had a blast,” a parent noting one child chose swimming in the afternoon while another stayed in the gym working in small groups with coaches and calling it a “terrific camp,” and another parent saying an 8-year-old who was new to basketball learned games that helped her dribble, shoot, and have fun. Other comments include thanks for a great camp and clinic, reports that kids are still practicing what they were taught, a parent saying their son was more inspired to practice than ever before, and appreciation for the healthy snacks.
