The STEAM Project Programs have been running for 10 YEARS RUNNING. The leadership team includes Founder/Executive Director James (Jay) Wengle, MSc, BEd; Office Manager Ailsa; Camp Director & Education Manager Sam; Programs Manager Arsalaan; and Camp Director Spencer. Staff credentials listed include Jay’s over 15 years as an educator with the York Region District School Board and experience as a program director at Camp Manitou, a professor at York University, a researcher at Sick Kids Hospital, and an educator at The York Centre; Sam as an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) with a Bachelor of Science and Education; Arsalaan with an Advanced Diploma in Electromechanical Engineering and a Bachelor’s in Manufacturing Engineering; and Spencer with a Specialized Honours Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Health Science.
According to the program’s mission statement, The STEAM Project focuses on empowering youth by providing them with tools and skills, making learning engaging and fun so that students are inspired to continue exploring the possibilities of the world around them. The program highlights hands-on STEAM experiences kids do not get in school, STEM and sports summer camps, school break camps, after-school courses, special events, and school partnerships. It states that programs engage and enrich children, enhance academic education and life skills, get children excited about learning, improve school performance, and support thriving in a modern world that increasingly demands scientific innovation. The program also emphasizes small class sizes with high staff-to-student ratios, notes “1 TEACHER TO STUDENT RATIO,” and states that as kids get older, they are introduced to new technologies and more intricate projects, with themes such as “Stay Curious,” “Think Like An Inventor,” and “Develop Your Skills.”
Community involvement is described through “Our Community Partners” and a note that there are 5 LOCATIONS IN GTA. Parent testimonials describe the staff as professional, kind, friendly, and accommodating, and mention that children created projects such as a robotic arm using Arduino, brought home something they made every day, and experienced an environment that parents highly recommend, including comments about warm greetings at drop-off and children asking to return for additional weeks.
