Since 1986, Pedalheads has been a leader in bike, swim, trail riding and soccer summer camps and lessons for kids, after being founded as Pedalheads Swim (formerly Atlantis Programs) in Vancouver, BC, by Claudia Sjoberg at age 26. Pedalheads is a multinational company that teaches tens of thousands of kids across more than 250 locations each year and has run 1M+ kids’ day camps and lessons, with more than 700,000 kids participating in its programs. The company operates more than 400 locations across Canada and the US.
Instructors undergo thorough background checks and are trained in skill development, safety, class management and program delivery. Swim camps include longer lessons, smaller classes and a curriculum taught by high-energy instructors. Summer bike camps for kids 2–12 take kids from training wheels to riding on the road, trail riding camps for kids 4–10 provide at least 2 hours of continuous riding, and soccer camps for kids 2–8 include teamwork, maximum ball touches and one-on-one coaching. Day camps and lessons run rain or shine, with possible adjustments or cancellations in hazardous weather, and programs may be impacted by air quality and extreme weather based on guidelines from Canadian and American health agencies.
Pedalheads has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying or discrimination of any kind and is a nut-aware camp where families are asked to avoid bringing nuts if possible. The organization launched Pedalheads+ to provide no cost camps and lessons to families with geographical, financial or other barriers. The mission is to inspire kids to believe in themselves, and the vision is to create “I did it!” moments through instructional programs for kids in North America and beyond, guided by values that include being great, doing good, valuing people, inspiring children, seeing everyone as a leader, and having fun.
For swim lessons, families are asked to bring a bathing suit, towel, indoor footwear, a swim diaper for parent and tots classes, and optional goggles and swim cap depending on the pool. For bike camp, required items include a bicycle, properly fitted bike helmet, water bottle and snack, weather-dependent items like mosquito repellent, rain gear and sunscreen, a small backpack, weather-appropriate clothes, closed toe shoes such as running or athletic shoes, and any required medication such as an EpiPen; all-day campers also need sunscreen, lunch, extra snacks and a change of clothes, and are asked to avoid bringing nuts if possible. For trail riding camp, kids need a ready-to-ride bike that is at least 14", without training wheels, with front and back hand brakes and gears, a properly fitted bike helmet, a small backpack they can ride with (no cross bags), a water bottle or hydration pack and snack, weather-appropriate clothes, closed toe running or athletic shoes (no rain boots or closed-toed sandals), and any required medication such as an EpiPen; all-day campers also need sunscreen, lunch, extra snacks and a change of clothes, with the same nut-aware guideline.
Claudia Sjoberg is the Founder and CEO and received the 2017 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur TELUS Trailblazer Award. One parent from British Columbia reported that their daughter went from not being able to swim to swimming by day three in a small class with an instructor who gave clear summaries after each lesson. Another parent from Ontario described an instructor as patient and gentle, saying their child went from scared to confident and wanted to return the next week. A parent from Colorado shared that their child’s trail camp involved riding many miles with coaches they described as great and knowledgeable, and that their child was excited to return each day.
