About
Pedalheads Camps and Lessons offers biking, swimming, trail riding, and soccer activities through bike camps, swim camps and lessons, soccer camps and classes, and trail riding camps. Kids in bike and trail riding camps may also take part in a bike and trail riding camp warmup activity called the Get Going Game. Trail riding camps take place on local trails that can include gravel paths, pump tracks, and small features in more advanced levels, while other camps take place at the Pedalheads camp.
• Ages: 2–12 years old
Since 1986, Pedalheads Camps and Lessons has offered bike, swim, trail riding, and soccer summer camps and lessons for kids 2–12 of all skill levels. The program offers kids day camps and lessons that grow skills and confidence, including summer bike camps for kids 2–12 that take kids from training wheels to riding on the road, swim camps and lessons for kids 4 months and up, soccer camps and classes for kids 2–8, and trail riding camps for kids 4–10 with at least 2 hours of continuous riding. Swim camps include longer lessons, smaller classes, and a curriculum taught by high-energy instructors, and soccer camps combine teamwork, maximum ball touches, and one-on-one coaching to develop core skills and grow kids’ love for sport.
Instructors undergo thorough background checks and are trained in skill development, safety, class management, and program delivery. All day campers get an hour-long lunch break. Pedalheads is described as a nut-aware camp, and families are asked to avoid nuts when packing food where noted. Camps and lessons run rain or shine, with possible activity holds or cancellations in potentially hazardous weather, and the program makes decisions based on recommended guidelines from Canadian and American health agencies regarding air quality. The program has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying or discrimination of any kind and operates at more than 250 locations across Canada and the US.
For swimming lessons, families are asked to send a bathing suit, towel, indoor footwear, a swim diaper for parent and tots classes, and optional goggles and swim cap depending on the pool. For bike camp, kids need a bicycle, a properly fitted bike helmet, a water bottle and snack, weather-dependent items like mosquito repellent, rain gear, or sunscreen, a small backpack, weather-appropriate clothes, closed-toe shoes such as running or athletic shoes, and any required medication such as an EpiPen; all day campers also need sunscreen, lunch, extra snacks, and a change of clothes. For trail riding camp, kids need a ready-to-ride bike that is at least 14", without training wheels, with front and back hand brakes and gears, a properly fitted bike helmet, a small backpack they can ride with (no cross bags), a water bottle or hydration pack and snack, weather-appropriate clothes, closed-toe running or athletic shoes (no rain boots or closed-toed sandals), and any required medication such as an EpiPen; all day campers also need sunscreen, lunch, extra snacks, and a change of clothes.
Pedalheads Camps and Lessons states that its mission is to inspire kids to believe in themselves and to create “I did it!” moments through swim, bike, trail riding, and soccer programs for kids across North America. The leadership team is headed by Founder and CEO Claudia Sjoberg, who received the 2017 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur TELUS Trailblazer Award. Pedalheads+ was launched to provide no-cost camps and lessons to families with geographical, financial, or other barriers. The program reports a Google Reviews rating of 4.8 based on over 2000 submissions.
Parent feedback includes comments such as a child going from not being able to swim to swimming by day three in a small swim class with clear progress updates, a child in Ontario who became more confident with a patient and gentle instructor, and a Colorado family describing trail camp coaches as great and knowledgeable, noting that the kids rode many miles and were eager to return each day.
