About
Skytown Parent Cooperative Preschool offers play-based and project-based learning in a multi-age classroom. Children engage in activities such as sand projects in a large sand area, using a sensory bin to explore volumes and weights, building with blocks, and putting on capes. They also have access to an indoor painting station, an art table, and easels, and they spend time both indoors and outdoors observing plants, insects, birds, and spiders, splashing in puddles, and listening to the sounds of nature.
• Ages: 3–5 years old
Skytown Parent Cooperative Preschool follows a play-based, emergent curriculum that uses elements of the Reggio Emilia philosophy, with the curriculum emerging from the children’s own interests. Children move freely indoors and outdoors for most of the day, exploring their world as they choose and engaging with the natural world, math and science, literacy, and art. The program includes a focus on social and emotional development, co-regulation between adults and children to help manage emotions, and the practice of self-care as a formal curriculum element. As a cooperative school model, teachers and parents work together, parents participate in the classroom, and parent education is part of the program, with families becoming part of the Skytown community. The teachers and parents at Skytown work together to create an environment where children know themselves, express themselves, and have respect and empathy for others. Skytown prioritizes supporting families with maternity and paternity leave, community meal trains, and playdate trains. Skytown holds Facility #073408876 and is featured in the Richmond Chamber of Commerce Newsletter. Skytown is currently accepting applications for the 2025-2026 school year.
