K-12 STEM Education Programs – Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering includes hands-on engineering activities, virtual project activities and demos, presentations, and student project opportunities. Program options include design, coding, and robotics, building functioning robots, using a controller application to interact with robots, analyzing results from the annual Riverside County homelessness survey, coding, and developing apps with real-world applications. Additional offerings include a summer research training program related to stem cells and regenerative medicine, an introduction to Artificial Intelligence with topics such as security, fairness, and privacy, learning to code with Python, and participating in interactive AI projects.

The Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement Program (MESA) works with educationally disadvantaged students from the Inland Empire to help middle and high school students excel in math and science and encourage them to graduate with math-based degrees. MESA has 50+ years of serving communities and is home to the largest MESA Center in the state. Community partnerships include STRIDE, a new STEM program at UC Riverside for high school students that will emphasize diversity, inclusion, equity and improving access to healthcare in the region, as well as collaborations with Redlands Unified School District for the UCR Summer Engineering Program and Riverside Unified School District for the Data Science Academy, which can be experienced as one of two summer cohorts or a year-long cohort. Additional events and programs include FIRST LEGO League, a guided, global robotics program with regional competitions; StepCon in partnership with Bourns, Inc.; Bourns Engineering Day, which has become the largest STEM event in Riverside County with more than 1,200 students; Dia de Ciencias hosted by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE); Bourns Engineering Day hosted by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE); CS4All Code Camp, a free one-week intensive program; and an Artificial Intelligence Camp that provides an introduction to Artificial Intelligence including its applications and social impacts such as security, fairness, and privacy.
