Buzzardball offers weekly summer basketball camps for boys and girls in grades K–8, with Mini camps for boys and girls in grades Pre-K through 3rd grade, Big Kids camps for boys and girls in grades 4th–8th grade, and an All Girls camp for girls in grades K–8. Camps are divided into four different teams that compete for Buzzardball headbands, and All-Star Friday winners receive Buzzardball headbands. Registration includes a traditional Buzzardball T-shirt with a 2026 theme year #30 celebrating Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors, camp photos (group, individual, friends, sibling), daily snacks including red licorice, All-Star Thursday and Friday festivities, and what the program describes as “A Complete Youth Basketball Experience” with an “Infusion of Life Skills.” Big Kids Camps also feature Fathead giveaways of top NBA players, and there are Hall of Fame introductions for graduating 8th graders who have attended Buzzardball over their childhood. Families can choose morning and afternoon camps, and children who attend both sessions have a one-hour lunch break supervised by coaches, with parents asked to send lunch.
Buzzardball describes itself as “Sacramento's Complete Youth Basketball Experience” and states that participants learn about sportsmanship, gamesmanship, respect, being a good teammate, and being a leader, and that the program “cares more about who they are when they step outside the gym.” The director’s stated goal is to “provide each child and their family the best youth sports experience in Northern California,” and the long-standing motto is: “Be a GOOD sport, PLAY HARD, HAVE FUN, and always remember, IT'S JUST A GAME.” The program is built around being available for boys and girls of all levels and providing a safe and fun environment to learn the game and improve basketball skills while having fun with friends.
Buzzardball started in 1994 as a small summer basketball program at St. Michael's in Carmichael, later moved to Arden Church of the Nazarene in 1997, and returned to St. Michael's in 2008. It ran each summer for 24 straight years until the pandemic, held a Zoom camp in 2020, and in 2021 found a new home at Sport Courts Fitness and celebrated its 25th anniversary with 750 kids participating. Summer camp stats include 911 kids and 20 camps in 2022, and the program notes “Summer Camp 30 Years, Winter League 20 Years, Summer League 6 Years.” The Winter League is entering its 16th year as a league, with history noting 957 kids and 93 teams in the 2021–22 season and 800 kids in 2019, and 3rd–8th graders in the Winter League play their championship game at Golden One Center, home of the Sacramento Kings. The Winter League is described as having an NBA feel with weekly standings, write-ups, and high-quality jerseys.
The leadership team includes Steve Buzzard as Director, and Toph Buzzard and Max Buzzard as Assistant Directors. Steve Buzzard is entering his 28th year as director of the Summer Hoop Camp and started the camp in 1994 with 30 kids over a four-week period. Toph Buzzard graduated from Jesuit High School in 2014 and Azusa Pacific in 2018 and serves as the PK–4th grade P.E. teacher, intramural director, and assistant athletic director at St. Michael's. Max Buzzard has been on the coaching staff for 11 years, was a camper since age five, and graduated from Granite Bay High School.
Buzzardball features kids from the Greater Sacramento area and surrounding communities such as Folsom, Davis, Elk Grove, Roseville, and Rocklin, and notes wider community partnerships with the Sacramento Kings, Jesuit High School, and others. The program highlights Buzzardball Hall of Fame inductions, including inductees Aidan Whalen, George Zimmerman, Ashley DuFosee, Savannah DuFosee, and Wyatt Alpha, as part of its longevity milestones.
Parents and participants have shared testimonials, including one family describing a first-time camper going into TK who had never attended daycare or organized social activities, noting Coach Jack’s support, the communication before, during, and after camp, the timing of drills with a ratio of fun to focus, the excitement of hearing the camper’s name over the microphone, and the camper’s reaction to camp swag such as a croc charm. Another testimonial from a participant and coach, Jake Harouni, describes Buzzardball as a friendly and welcoming environment and notes that his first time playing organized basketball was in Buzzardball and that it was a way to build fundamentals while having a good time.
