Statewide Leadership Conference
California State University, Sacramento, 6000 Jed Smith Drive, Sacramento, CA 95816
About
The Statewide Leadership Conference includes workshops and seminars that focus on leadership skills, academic preparedness, self-esteem, cultural awareness, and understanding state and local government. Students take part in a Legislative Day at the State Capitol with mock hearings and interaction with legislators and legislative staff, attend Campaign Development Workshops on how to organize and run political campaigns, and join a College & Careers Day that features a College Fair with community college, CSU, UC, and private college recruiters.
• Ages: 15–17 years old
• Schedule: The 44th Annual Statewide Leadership Conference will take place July 19–25, 2026
• Price: Housing, meals, program materials and transportation to and from the conference are provided at no cost to the participants or their families.
Since 1982, the Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project (CLYLP) has offered the Statewide Leadership Conference as a once in a lifetime opportunity for California’s youth in Sacramento and brings 120 high school students from throughout the state to participate in a week-long intensive leadership program. The program’s curriculum is based on four areas: Community, Culture, College, and Careers, and students are expected to leave with information and tools they can begin using when they return to school in the fall, as well as new friendships from throughout California. College representatives, admissions staff, and financial aid experts provide information on how to apply for and succeed in college, and students are expected to use their campaign development skills later at school for class and student body elections.
The mission of the CLYLP is to enhance and further develop the leadership potential of California’s youth as they prepare to become future leaders of the state and nation. CLYLP partners with academic institutions, corporations, community leaders, and professionals to work toward shared goals to advance youth and their development, and alumni and volunteers lead many parts of the organization while training the next generation of volunteers and leaders. The organization states that it does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, color, ethnicity, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or age in its programs or activities.
