San Diego Danceworks has been inspiring students to dance since 1990, and in 1993 Barbara Rinaldo became Director and moved the studio to its present location in the Mt. Soledad Business Park in North Clairemont. The two dance studios have sprung floors, and there is a viewing area for children’s classes where siblings are welcome to come and play. Families can book a complimentary trial class.

The leadership team includes Studio Director and Dance Instructor Barbara Rinaldo; Company Director and Dance Instructor Peyton Wright; Dance Company Coaches and Dance Instructors Elena Voytilla, Mikel Weigel, and Bex Walker; and Dance Instructors Lindsay Brzenski, Hope Worth, Maya Howard, Erin Jelacic, Amanda Ginella, and Josie Murphy. The mission of San Diego Danceworks states that dance as an art form develops the whole person, that teachers are compassionate and knowledgeable while respecting individual body types and developmental needs, and that the program encourages creativity and expression of feelings to give students confidence in their ability to think for themselves and bring their ideas into actions.

The SDDW Dance Company encourages teamwork, sportsmanship, work ethic, responsibility, dedication, and self confidence through organized rehearsals, competitions, and community performances. The company approaches competitive dancing with a growth mindset, focusing on competition as a chance to learn and grow dance skills over time, and it works to highlight each dancer’s individual strengths. Company dancers receive multiple performance opportunities each season, combining competitions and conventions so dancers can learn from a variety of industry professionals, and conventions are used to help develop well-rounded dancers who can learn and perform choreography quickly from teachers with varying teaching styles. The Mini Company Team for ages 6–8 attends one competition, one convention, and the Annual Studio Recital, while the Full Company Team for ages 9 and up attends three regional competitions, a national competition, one convention including competition, and the Annual Studio Recital, with a Company Boot Camp scheduled for August 4th–8th.

San Diego Danceworks performs throughout the year at community events such as craft fairs and fall festivals at area public schools. In collaboration with Creative Stages of San Diego, the program performs The Nutcracker annually in December, and the year culminates in a performance at the San Diego County Fair and in an Annual Recital at the Creative Performing & Media Arts Center.

Pointe classes at San Diego Danceworks require registration for two hours of ballet per week. The Director of the Pointe program evaluates students’ readiness before enrolling them in pre-pointe and pointe classes. Dancers in acro classes must also take a ballet class, and instructors evaluate dancers before placing them in an acro class.
