Ocean Experience Surf & Skate Camps and Lessons

Ocean Experience Surf & Skate Camps and Lessons offers surf lessons, surf camps, skate camps, and summer camps that include activities such as kayaking, body boarding, snorkeling, and stand-up paddle (SUP) board use. The program also provides group surf lessons, private surf lessons, open group surf lessons, and private surf instruction, along with options for birthday parties, retirement parties, school parties, and demos. Students can also access SUP board rentals, surf board rentals, and body boarding as part of the program’s offerings.

• Schedule: Full day and half day drop-in and week-long camps run throughout the year
• Price: Summer Camps: Half Day Surf or Skate Camp $345 per session; Full Day Surf $545 per session; Full Day Combo (Surf & Skate) Camp $545 per session. Open group surf lessons: $65 per hour per person. Private instruction: $75 per hour per person with a 2-hour minimum.

Ocean Experience Surf & Skate Camps and Lessons is part of Ocean Experience Surf School, which uses the Pacific Ocean as the classroom and offers a proven learn-to-surf method with daily group and private surf lessons. All students receive complimentary equipment rentals for the remainder of the day after their lesson and exclusive discounts on future rentals and purchases, and private parties can include either lessons or just equipment. Instructors are ocean safety, water rescue, First Aid, and CPR certified, are described as certified and professional, and the staff has been extensively trained.

Ocean Experience became San Diego’s first surf school in 1990 and is described as San Diego’s oldest and most trusted, qualified surf school, with 31 years of surfing instruction. The mission states that Ocean Experience surf lessons and camps build confidence, ensure success, and empower students of all ages and abilities, and that Ocean Experience Surf School develops skills and confidence while instilling a passion to surf for life. All programs are customized to fit the needs of each group, organization, or individual, and the mission also notes a focus on fun outdoor activities every day, learning new sports, improving skills, connecting with other kids, overcoming fears, and providing a unique and meaningful learning experience in an exciting and dynamic atmosphere.

A portion of every camp tuition is donated to provide summer camps to at-risk youth and empowering surf lessons to those who never thought they could surf, and purchases of summer camps, lessons, or donations are described as helping students gain confidence, self-empowerment, resilience, and friendships. Ocean Experience is partnered with the Peninsula Surf Club, a nonprofit, and reports that support from loyal customers and donors enabled donations of $42,985 to local communities in 2019, $7,858 donated yearly to local schools, $11,125 donated yearly in scholarships, and $24,002 donated yearly to Peninsula Surf Club, including over 10 scholarships for students to attend surf and skate camps. The organization is transitioning into a nonprofit called Ocean Experience Institute, which is described as continuing to spread the love of the ocean to everyone, including at-risk, disadvantaged, and disabled students of all ages.
