The Artist Outpost Youth Art & Pottery Programs are part of The Artist Outpost, which was founded in 2018 by co-owners and teachers Meryl Hamilton and Eryn McCarty. The mission of The Artist Outpost is to inspire the community through collaboration and creation. The studio offers art and pottery classes for kids and adults and includes beginner-friendly clay handbuilding and pottery workshops, with all materials, glazing, and kiln firing included for specified pottery workshops, and finished pieces from some pottery workshops ready for pickup in a few weeks. All materials are included for private parties, and participants may bring their own food or beverages, and gift cards are available for art classes.
The leadership and teaching team includes co-founder and teacher Meryl Hamilton, who graduated with an Interior Design degree from Philadelphia University, and co-founder and teacher Eryn McCarty. Staff credentials also include Valerie Jackson, who earned a B.A. in Fine Art from the University of California, Santa Cruz; Corin Puckett, who is pursuing a fine arts degree at City College San Diego; Tariq Johnson, who earned a B.A. in Ceramics from San Diego State University; and Jonah Paraiso, who earned degrees in Computer Science and Music from UCSD. One day a week preschool is listed as coming soon.
Parent and student testimonials describe instructors who “seem like family” and remember children and praise them with “heartfelt compliments,” and one parent notes that programs “seem to attract other wonderful children” and “a little community of new friends comes with every experience.” Another parent reports that an 8-year-old “loves Artist Outpost camps,” mentions half-day and full-day programs, and describes being “amazed by quality of the items” their child made, including “a really beautiful bowl and cup.” Adult students describe the studio as “an awesome place for the community” with “a ton of class offerings,” a “calming and relaxing” environment with “all levels of skill,” and an “accepting vibe with all levels of talent,” and one pottery student notes starting with no pottery knowledge and continuing into a third series of classes. One testimonial states that their events are “doing so much to encourage the Voltaire art scene.”
